Taiwan’s Kevin Yu picked up the first PGA Tour playoff victory of his career on Sunday after a dramatic finale at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Mississippi.
The 26-year-old from Taipei conjured up a birdie on the par-4 18th to grab a share of the lead, then beat Beau Hossler on the first playoff hole to secure the win at the Country Club of Jackson.
It capped a remarkable final-round rally for Yu, who finished with a five-under-par 67, joining Hossler at the top of the leaderboard at 23 under.
“It’s literally a dream come true,” said an elated Yu after his win.
“I’ve dreamed of this moment since I was five. I think that’s every golfer’s dream – to win at the PGA.”
Yu credited his parents – who were there to witness his victory – for helping him build a career as a professional golfer.
“My dad taught me to play golf since I was five and they worked really hard and sacrificed a lot of things… without them I wouldn’t have been able to do this today.”
Yu had taken the lead at 20 under in the second round behind Keith Mitchell, with Hossler just one stroke ahead.
However, Mitchell’s final-round challenge failed due to a patchy two-under-par hole of 70, allowing Hossler to take the lead with a four-under-par hole of 68 and move one shot clear of the field with a birdie on the 17th hole could put down.
But Yu fought back with a brilliant birdie on the 18th and rolled a 15-foot putt under pressure to force a playoff.
Yu then repeated the feat when the playoff returned to the 18th, but this time with a birdie chance with a second shot that left him just five feet from the hole.
