Egyptian striker Omar Marmoush scored two goals, including an injury-time equalizer, to earn Eintracht Frankfurt a 3-3 draw and deny Bayern Munich a two-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga on Sunday.

Marmoush’s goal sparked wild scenes in Frankfurt, which ensured Bayern go into the international break ahead of RB Leipzig only on goal difference, after the Red Bull team had previously won 1-0 in Heidenheim.

Bayern had just clinched a 3-2 victory but Marmoush broke through in the fourth of six more minutes and the 25-year-old punished Bayern’s faltering defense to complete a thriller.

Frankfurt now have 13 points, just one point behind the joint leaders and extending their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions under coach Dino Toppmoeller.

Bayern central defender Min-Jae Kim scored the opening goal after Thomas Müller carefully rolled the ball back to the Korean following a corner, allowing the defender to shoot into the roof of the net.

It was only Kim’s second goal as a Bayern player, but Bayern were undone by Frankfurt’s first significant attack of the game, which came on the counterattack and completely against the run of play.

Ansgar Knauff did it by pushing the ball through Aleksandar Pavlovic’s legs and hitting Marmoush, who took it away from pursuer Joshua Kimmich with his first touch and shot past Manuel Neuer with his second.

Thirteen minutes later, Frankfurt had turned the game on its head and took a 2-1 lead. Marmoush turned provider and picked out Hugo Ekitike, while the Frenchman did the rest with a confident finish.

Marmoush is the Bundesliga’s top scorer this season with eight goals in six games, three more than Bayern’s Harry Kane.

But Frankfurt’s lead only lasted three minutes. Dayot Upamecano punched the ball in after Serge Gnabry overwhelmed the Frankfurt defense.

Bayern recovered from this thrilling battle in the 53rd minute as Michael Olise continued his good start to life in Germany.

The London-born Frenchman fired into the bottom corner from the edge of the box after Kane fired Raphael Guerreiro’s pass into the path of Olise, before Marmoush added a point.

Müller said Bayern should have won.

“We would probably win 13 out of 15 games like that,” he said. “It was a pleasure to see how we put the opponent in their place because we had a lot of chances to score.”

Leipzig had previously been ahead at the top of the table with their win in Heidenheim. Ikoma Openda scored the only goal and the Belgian spoke of the team’s solidarity after a fourth consecutive clean sheet in the league.

“We are really strong together. Our goal is to be strong, like a family, like a team, and to show that on the pitch. We have shown that since the beginning of the season,” Openda told DAZN.

Heidenheim came into the game in eighth place and frustrated Leipzig for long stretches.

It was only at the end of the half that Heidenheim’s goalkeeper Kevin Mueller was called into action to save Xavi Simons.

But shortly before the hour mark, Leipzig found another gear and broke through the Heidenheim defense.

19-year-old Norwegian Antonio Nusa was the architect, recognizing Openda’s run with a perfect pass that Openda picked up with ease before firing at the near post.

Openda, who also scored the winning goal when these teams met in April, hit the post with a few minutes left and Leipzig had to overcome late pressure from Heidenheim to secure the points.

In the last Bundesliga game before the international break, the inferior Stuttgart substitute Ermedin Demirovic scored the equalizer against Hoffenheim in the 100th minute – but the lost points keep Stuttgart out of the top six.

French defender Valentin Gendrey had given Hoffenheim the lead in the final minute of the first half, but the visitors were unable to get the three points they desperately needed, Demirovic saved the late penalty, but the Bosnian scored on the rebound.

Reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen lost a two-goal lead with a 2-2 draw against Holstein Kiel on Saturday and are now in fifth place.
